About Me
Guy Murphy is a researcher, writer and historian based in Melbourne (Australia) with over 14 years experience.
Mars
Guy's long-standing interest in Mars exploration was initially fired by reading science fiction while a university student, then by the Mars Pathfinder landing in 1998. He co-founded the Mars Society Australia later that year and served as its President between 2000 and 2005. He has participated in a number of scientific expeditions to Mars-like environments in outback South Australia. In 2003 he lived for 3 weeks with a crew of 12 in a simulated Mars base in southern Utah (the Mars Desert Research Station), providing support to a team of international engineering and scientific researchers. Guy has spoken at Mars conferences in Australia, Europe and the United States, and in 2005 attended a week long Moon-Mars habitat design workshop at the technical headquarters of the European Space Agency in the Netherlands.
Professional Experience
He has worked in the heritage industry for over 10 years, including 6 years with architects and heritage consultants Lovell Chen (formally Allom Lovell & Associates).
He has co-authored many reports on a broad range of building types dating from the early Victorian era to the present day including houses, flats, offices, shops, airport structures, hotels, churches, theatres, town halls, industrial sites, railway stations, bridges, hospitals, gardens, sports grounds, cemeteries, grain silos and high rise car parks.
He has also published website and newspaper articles and given talks on heritage related topics. In 2004 Guy published his first book, At Home on Hotham Hill.
He has a Bachelor of Arts (economic history) and a Graduate Diploma (architectural history & conservation) from the University of Melbourne. He is currently completing a project indexing Australasia in British architectural journals up to 1914, which he commenced while recently living in the United Kingdom.
Travel
Guy has travelled extensively, including journeys to China, Nepal, New Zealand, the United States, Britain, Ireland, France, Holland, Belguim and Germany. He has a particular knowledge of Britain, having lived there for nearly three and a half years and visited most of its regional towns and cities.
